FIC: Every Love and Each Regret 1.1

So, this is my new series! I've been working on it for a while, and have a master page where fics will be added as they're completed.
You can also go play guess the lyric there if you're so inclined.
This chapter PG for language.
I don't own them, and I'm not pretending to, not the songs or the characters.
Lyrics from Amy Winehouse's Amy, Amy, Amy

First up, Part 1 Chapter 1.

the way the shirt hangs off his back, my train of thought gets right off track

Sirius and James are at the table two in front and one across from Remus and Peter, talking under their breaths. James says something that makes Sirius laugh, and his shoulders shake under his shirt as he tries to repress the noise. The white material of his shirt is tight across the shoulders where Sirius has filled out lately. When he's bored and achy, Sirius rolls his shoulders back and forth, stretching out his spine. On hot days like today, the shirt will cling to the base of his back, the shifting of the cotton delayed there.

"Mr. Lupin?"

"Um - Sir?"

Remus' eyes snap towards the front of the class where Professor Slughorn is waiting, his usually jovial expression displeased. Remus can tell from the few muffled laughs that whatever Slughorn's question is, it's obviously been asked at least once before.

"What, Mr. Lupin, are the three critical ingredients of Amortentia?" Slughorn asks again.

Sirius twists slightly in his seat, trying to mouth the answers to Remus.

All he sees are perfectly formed lips moving silently, and then Sirius' tongue darts out, wetting his lips, and Remus looks away hurriedly, feeling the flush rising across his cheeks.

"No idea, Sir," he says honestly, barely able to remember the question by this point, because Sirius is laughing again, and his shoulders are moving as he nudges James, and his sleeves are tight across his developing upper arms.

Oh God, Remus groans internally.

Thankfully, although he's the head of Slytherin House, Slughorn isn't overly partial and doesn't take the opportunity to give Remus detention.

He does however, suggest to Sirius that as he's so willing to give Remus the answers, he should tutor his friend.

Oh God, Remus groans again, as Sirius takes Slughorn at his word, turns round and hollers across the room, "Six this evening in the library, Moony?"

Knowing that Sirius won't shut up without an answer, and wondering how the hell he gets away with interrupting lessons so much, Remus nods. Sirius looks back to Slughorn and gives a small, imperious wave.

"Carry on, Professor."

Oh God.

"...so the critical ingredients are those with the critical properties," Sirius says.

Remus watches the way Sirius' lips purse around the word properties, the way the torchlight glints off his hair, the way the skin on the inside of his forearms is so pale as to be almost translucent.

"...so all you need to do is work out the properties, and that's just a matter of..."

Remus tunes out again, watching Sirius' expressive hands move through the air as he makes a point that Remus can't even be bothered trying to understand. What's a passing mark in Potions compared to five solid minutes of staring at Sirius' mouth?

"...but the interactions between certain ingredients are important, too, and you can't learn that by rote, you have to get the underlying theory and then - the moon is made of blue cheese and Prongs has Kneazle stripes on his arse."

"Oka - Huh?" Remus is dragged out of his contemplation. What was - James' arse?

"Welcome back, Moony. Listen, is something wrong?"

"No," Remus answers promptly. "What would be wrong?"

"You've just been...weird lately."

"No I haven't," Remus says desperately. Sirius has noticed the stares, he must have. It's been two weeks since the day Remus woke up, blearily tugged his curtains open and watched dry-mouthed as Sirius pulled on his shirt, trading boisterous jokes with James. There was...just something in the way his arms moved, the way his hair tumbled to his neck, brushing against the pulse that Remus found himself imagining he could feel. Looking back, Remus supposes he's not been exactly subtle. Sirius' attractiveness blindsides him at the least appropriate times and now -

"Is it a - " Sirius glances around and lowers his voice, " - furry problem?"

"No," Remus says. "No, it's not because there isn't a problem," he adds firmly.

"Oh, come off it!" Sirius snaps, and he seems almost annoyed now. "You don't concentrate in lessons, you can hardly speak to me without getting distracted, I just - what'd I do?"

"D-do?" Remus is dumbfounded. Nothing except be born with a face like that and flaunt it every day. "You didn't do anything, Padfoot. I'm just - I'm tired and I - "

"Bullshit," Sirius says, standing up sharply, before he takes two deliberately slow breaths and leans across the table, planting his knuckles on the wood in front of Remus' arms. "Bullshit, Moony, but if that's what you need, then that's fine. See you later."

And he stalks away, ignoring Remus as he calls out after him, earning himself disgruntled looks from the nearby table of seventh year Ravenclaws.

Even angry, Sirius is a turn on, Remus reflects morosely as he takes the time to watch Sirius round a corner and disappear, before letting his forehead slam down onto the desk.

Two weeks later...

This is a really interesting beginning! Poor distracted Remus! I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens next :)

First of all, I LOVE the idea of a story arc written around different bits of lyrics.

Secondly, this was REALLY great. I'm all excited to see how this story will unravel!

Great job! :)

Thanks so much. Yeah, the lyric thing came cause I was totally failing at writing another wip I had going and thought maybe I could write a few song-inspired short pieces and then, well, I don't know when to stop, evidently.

I'm really glad you're enjoying it.

How did I miss this?!?!?! It's great!

I love the tension betweent he two. Well, for Remus it's tension, Sirius just seems oblivious.

And this was great: "...but the interactions between certain ingredients are important, too, and you can't learn that by rote, you have to get the underlying theory and then - the moon is made of blue cheese and Prongs has Kneazle stripes on his arse."

I can't wait to read more!

BTW, love your Slughorn!

So well-written. Wonderful dialogue and plot, and it isn't dense with descriptions or angst, but it moves so smoothly and quickly. Going to read the rest!
