FIC: I Never Cared Before [1/1]
So, I started doing that meme where you put your music player on random and write ficlets for each of the songs, for as long as the song is playing. However! I cheated and I am fiddling with them. Anyway, this was the first song that came up and I cannot hear it without thinking James/Lily so here is my ficlet thing for Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong by Radiohead.
Title: I Never Cared Before
Rating Oh, who knows. PG-13 for angst?
Pairing: James/Lily
Disclaimer: JKR's, not mine.
Summary: I stood in front of her face when the first bullet was shot
Words: ~340
James has never really been scared of Halloween, but tonight he can't help himself crossing the room to stare out the window into the dark night. After his sixth or seventh trip, he feels Lily step up behind him and slip her arms around his waist. She kisses his shoulder and he turns his head to breathe deep, taking in the aroma that is uniquely Lily. He loves her so much that it is unnerving, and yet compared to the way he feels about Harry, it almost pales. He can't bring himself to think too closely about how much he adores either one of them, because if he does then cowardice will take over and he will grab them both, taking them to some place where they can be alone and happy forever. As they should be.
"Come and sit down," she says, and there is such gentleness in her tone that his knees almost buckle as he allows himself to confront for the first time what is happening among them. He has always thought that anything will be worth it, if it is for Lily and Harry but everything - everything is falling apart.
He has opened his mouth to tell Lily that he loves her when he hears the crack from outside. He is already yelling at her to go, go, get out, get Harry, get out when he arrives at the window. And there. Out there. Impossibly, inexplicably, the Dark Lord is standing on the pathway to their little house, brushing the gate aside like so much smoke. James wheels back, and takes a look at Lily's green eyes and her red, red hair. He wants to tell her that he will love her forever, whether they die tonight or grow old and grey and cantankerous together.
There is no time.
"I - " James says, and then Lily turns to the stairs, taking them three at a time as the front door explodes inwards and James squares his shoulders to face his death.
I wrapped you inside my coat
when they came to firebomb the house
I didn't feel pain cause no one can touch me
now that I'm held in your spell
